About Clear Creek Canyon
Clear Creek is a tributary of the South Platte River. The South Platte flows through Colorado and Nebraska and is considered a major river of the Midwest and Southwest/Mountain West. The river is 439 miles long and is formed southwest of Denver in South Park. Clear Creek flows through Clear Creek Canyon in the Rocky Mountains. It descends through a long gorge, emerging on the Colorado Eastern Plains to join the South Platte. You may know the area for being associated with early mining activity during the Colorado Gold Rush of 1859. The creek was associated with the route of the Colorado Central Railroad, as well as with U.S. Highway 6 and Interstate 70. Clear Creek passes through Golden, past the Coors brewery. It also flows through the Denver Metropolitan Area, as well as Lakewood and Wheat Ridge. The creek was initially known as Cannonball Creek, and later Vasquez Fork.
