Gaming
Black Hawk is the casino gaming capital of Colorado, with 17 casinos and over 200,000 square feet of gaming action. Available games run the gamut, from thousands of slot machines to blackjack and poker. In 2010, Colorado voters approved an increase in the maximum bet (from $5 to $100) and the introduction of new, exciting table games like craps and roulette.
The intimate size and historic feel of Black Hawk make it a fun place to gamble. Many of our casinos reside in historic buildings that are often a century or more old. When combined with modern amenities, the resulting atmosphere is truly unique.
Exploring the town is easy, as many casinos are a short walk from each other. You can walk from one end of the town (Monarch Casino) to the other (Black Hawk Station) in under thirty minutes, or take one of our free shuttles, which run every twenty minutes.
Black Hawk is a short 40 minute drive from Denver, making it an ideal destination for a quick day trip, a short weekend, or a more extended stay. If an extended or overnight stay is your preference, many casinos have lodging and dining options letting you stay (literally) feet from the gaming action.

HIKING & BIKING
During the warm summer months, there is no better way to explore the beauty of Colorado’s landscape than by hiking or biking a nearby mountain trail.
Maryland Mountain Quartz Valley Open Space Park
Maryland Mountain Quartz Valley Open Space Park is an outdoor day-use recreation park for walking, hiking, running, mountain biking, picnicking, and wildlife observation. In 2020, the City of Black Hawk opened the Hidden Treasure Trailhead and corresponding bridge linking to the City’s open space.
The trail system weaves around and through Maryland Mountain, Chase Gulch, Quartz Valley, and the historic narrow gauge Gilpin Tramway. Hikers and bikers will enjoy vistas and panoramic views of Black Hawk, Central City, and the northern rural regions of Gilpin County. The park also includes interesting historical sites, such as the Bonanza Mill, the Belden & Tennal Stamp Mill, the Robert Emmet Mine, and the Queen of the West Mine, to name a few.
The Maryland Mountain trail system has opportunities for various levels of interest and ability. Whether you are hoping to complete a leisurely mile or a longer summit climb, you will surely find a piece of Black Hawk’s rich history and abundant beauty during your outdoor adventure.

Columbine Camping Info >>SCENIC DRIVES
Colorado is well known for its scenery, especially in the mountains near to and surrounding Black Hawk. If “roughing it” outside isn’t your preference, there’s still plenty to enjoy by taking in some scenery from the comfort of your car. These are some of our favorite scenic trips, all of which are a short drive from Black Hawk.
THE PEAK-TO-PEAK HIGHWAY
The Peak-to-Peak Highway was established in 1918, making it Colorado’s oldest scenic byway. Its 63 mile journey begins in Central City and ends in beautiful Estes Park, with attractions and beautiful views the whole way.
Peak To Peak Travel Info >>MOUNT EVANS SCENIC BYWAY
The 28-mile Mount Evans Highway is the nation’s highest automobile road and doubles as a national forest scenic byway. It climbs from Idaho Springs to the 14,264-foot summit of Mount Evans, and features some stunning views of the eastern plains. We recommend that you check the road’s status beforehand, as weather will occasionally close it down. The drive isn’t for the faint at heart, as the road drops off precipitously in same places, and the air at the top is quite thin.
Mount Evans Travel Info >>GUANELLA PASS
This relatively short drive between Grant and Georgetown passes over 11,700 foot Guanella Pass, and offers great views of a variety of Colorado ecosystems. The lower elevations of the drive feature thick stands of native trees, while higher elevations give way to treeless tundra, ripe with wildflowers in the summer months.
Guanella Pass Travel Info >>LARIAT LOOP
For something a little different than the other byways featured above, we recommend the Lariat Loop, a 40 mile drive through the foothills near Denver, through the towns of Golden, Evergreen, and Morrison. Explore a variety of open space parks, museums, and heritage sites, including the famous Red Rocks Amphitheater, or just take in the unique geologic scenery along the way.
Lariat Loop Travel Info >>SKIING & BOARDING
When thinking about Colorado, few things come to mind more readily than skiing and snowboarding. This truly is a world class destination for enjoying the snow, and Black Hawk is fortunate to be an easy drive from some of the best slopes and resorts in Colorado. Here are our favorite places to ski and snowboard:
LOVELAND SKI AREA

Loveland is home for those that simply want to ski or ride.
Loveland Ski Area Site >>BRECKENRIDGE
Situated about an hour and twenty minutes from Black Hawk, this immensely popular resort is sure to please skiers and boarders of any ability. Advanced skiers will love Breckenridge’s European-style bowls, while boarders are sure to rave about the highly regarded terrain parks. Echo Mountain Site >>KEYSTONE
Keystone is a little over an hour’s drive from Black Hawk, and is unique among Colorado ski destinations in one popular respect: when most other resorts start après ski, Keystone turns on the lights, letting skiers keep going into the night!
