Enjoy Take A Hike Day on November 17th

Get out and enjoy the great outdoors this November 17th for Take a Hike Day. Experience nature in a state or national park as you take on challenging hiking trails. There’s something for every level of hiker from beginner to the more experienced. Here are some trails to try out on this day around Black Hawk.

Golden Gate Canyon State Park

Located less than five miles from the city of Black Hawk, this state park offers numerous trails. Many of them are moderate or even difficult to hike, which offers adventure for the seasoned hiker. There are also several trails that are shorter and easier for the beginner. Black Bear Trail is 3.4 miles and allows you to do some rock climbing. At the end, you’ll enjoy magnificent views of Mt. Evans.

Blackhawk Peak Trail

Visit Arapahoe National Forest for a historical trail that will captivate your attention and challenge your body. This trail takes you along a ghost town and some old gold mines that have been abandoned. With a climb of 1,344 feet, you’ll feel every one of the four miles. The trail starts around five miles to the north of Black Hawk. Enjoy a beautiful meadow filled with wildflowers in warm weather as you hike this trail.

Squaw Mountain

Enjoy an overnight hike at Squaw Mountain, which is just 20 miles to the south of Black Hawk. It runs along Highway 103 and follows a dirt road for one mile before hikers reach a fire lookout. You can even rent the lookout for overnight by reserving it online through the Arapaho National Forest. Experience an unforgettable sunset at the end of your hike.

Tips for Hiking

Know the trail you plan to hike on and pack accordingly. You’ll want to take a drink and snacks for even a short hike. Know what wildlife to expect on these trails. Some may have reports of bear or other large animals. Don’t approach any wild animal and know how to respond if you see something cross your path.

After you’ve enjoyed a beautiful day in nature, spend your evening experiencing the best of Black Hawk at one of the casinos. Numerous restaurants offer a variety of foods to fit every palette while the hotels offer comfort amenities for a good night’s rest so you can experience even more of the area the next day.
