Book a stay at the Loveland Ski Area, which is just 53 miles west of the city of Denver. You can also check out the newest resort in Colorado, Echo Mountain, which is only 45 minutes from Black Hawk. This location is designed for the serious skier with more attention on skiing than lodging.

The closest resort to Black Hawk is Eldora at only 40 minutes. It also happens to be one of the most affordable places and a favorite with the locals.

Scenic Drives

As long as the roadways are clear, you can enjoy an amazing view of the surrounding countryside around Black Hawk. One of the best is the Peak-to-Peak Highway, which starts in Central City, not far from Black Hawk. It ends in Estes Park after a 63-mile scenic journey.

Mountain Evans Scenic Byway is the highest road for automobiles in the US and features a climb to the 14,264-foot summit. Make sure you’re awake because there are some pretty impressive drop-offs along the way. Lariat Loop is a unique drive with a 40-mile trip through several smaller towns. You’ll find plenty of places to stop along the way with museums and heritage sites to keep you entertained.

No matter where you go in Colorado in the winter for a drive, make sure you check the road conditions and weather forecast beforehand. While the roads are well-maintained, a storm can come up and make driving dangerous.

This small city is the perfect size for gaming with many historic buildings being transformed into luxurious casinos and restaurants as well as hotels for the complete experience.

Monarch Casino sits at one end of the city while Black Hawk Station is just 30 minutes away at the other end. With free shuttles running all day, you don’t have to even drive in the winter weather if you don’t want to.
