Black Hawk’s Annual Boom Town Fireworks
The city of Black Hawk, CO is known for its annual Boom Town Fireworks celebration. As the largest display in Colorado, you don’t want to miss this. The fireworks display typically happens at 9:30 pm on July 4. The celebration takes place with weather and fire restrictions permitting. It did not occur in 2020 due to COVID-19, so be sure to check ahead of time. Black Hawk visitors still had a great time because there is so much to do here. The area does see some rain, so be sure to bring appropriate clothing and maybe an umbrella. - Camping – We certainly don’t blame you if you choose to stay at one of the area’s many hotel/casinos, but Black Hawk is the perfect place to go camping and enjoy the beautiful weather and scenery. There are many nearby scenic campgrounds, including Denver West KOA, Golden Gate State Park – Reverend’s Ridge, Kelly Dahl Campground – Roosevelt National Forest, and Columbine Campground. You can choose to pitch a tent or spend the night in an RV.
- Hiking & Biking – While you’ll have to come back in the winter to take advantage of the many skiing and snowboarding opportunities, there are still many places to enjoy the great outdoors in summer. Whether you prefer to travel on foot or go mountain biking, there are plenty of great trails. Black Hawk is located just minutes from Golden Gate State Canyon Park. There are hiking and biking trails for everyone from beginners to experts. Choose from Burro Loop Trail, Black Hawk Peak, James Peak Lake Trail. St. Mary’s Glacier, Warren Gulch, and more.
- Scenic Drives – While some visitors arrive in Black Hawk by bus, renting a car or driving your own has its advantages. There are many scenic drives in the area, and you’ll love seeing the beautiful mountains. The Peak-to-Peak Highway is Colorado’s oldest scenic byway, and Mount Evans Highway is the country’s highest automobile road. You’ll find great views of many Colorado ecosystems on the Guanella Pass, and the Lariat Loop will take you through multiple towns.
